Galderma Production Canada Inc. is a pharmaceutical company based in Montréal. FINTEX was given a mandate to carry out a study on the use of ozone as a water treatment process for cooling towers. The first objective of the study was to present technical information on the efficiency of ozone to destroy bacteria. A second objective of the study was to examine alternatives to the use of cooling towers in the plant refrigeration system.
The conclusion of the study is that an alternative to conventional treatment is the use of ozone as a strong oxidant to reduce the risk of Legionnaires disease to an acceptable level. The possibility of replacing the existing refrigeration system and cooling tower was also evaluated. A new air-cooled refrigeration system was proposed and the capital investment cost of the alternative and the extra operating cost per year were defined.
