This study included the preparation of an energy balance on the four asphalt pre-heaters, determining the natural gas operation cost for the pre-heaters, examining the global efficiency of the system and then proposing solutions to lower natural gas consumption. The conclusion of the study was to install a new pre-heater with an economizer and micro-modulation burner control. This project saved $150,000 per year of natural gas, with a payback of less than two years.
As part of a program to increase the production capacity of its asphalt shingles line we prepared the drawings and specifications for a thermal heating system for the new calender. The project consisted in conducting an energy balance of the thermal oil system which supplies the two asphalt shingles lines. The objective of this evaluation was to determine if the boiler had the necessary capacity to feed the new calender. Design and specifications of the thermal oil piping associated with a new calender was carried out.
