Kronos Canada is the main Canadian manufacturer of titanium oxide which is used as a pigment in the paint and plastic industry. The client mandated FINTEX to carry out a complete energy study on two of its titanium oxide dryers. This project included preparation of an overall mass and energy balance for both tunnel type dryers. The study has identified projects to modernize the drying process generating a 30 per cent reduction of natural gas consumption of the two dryers. This study led to the implementation of a project which generated natural gas savings of more than $ 300,000 / year.
FINTEX was mandated by Kronos to evaluate the process hot water production system and the possible recuperation of energy from process operations. An overall water and energy balance was prepared and a complete reconfiguration of the hot water system was proposed, which allowed the optimisation of hot water use and the recuperation of energy. This study identified projects which could reduce plant energy consumption by over $ 600,000 per year with a payback of less than one year.
